Norway, dressed in white, started the match, but it was Italy who were more aggressive in the opening minutes. Matteo Politano sent in a cross from the right that immediately tested the Norwegian defense, while Frattesi’s attempt from the first corner was saved by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

The first clear chance came in the seventh minute. Di Lorenzo’s cross was headed by Esposito, but the wing-back’s first-time shot went just wide of the far post. Italy grew in confidence and attacked the left side of the Norwegian defense.

That pressure paid off in the 11th minute. Dimarco linked up with Retegui before sending a low pass into the penalty area, which Esposito quickly tapped in to put the Azzurri ahead 1-0. This was the young striker’s third international goal and drew loud cheers from the San Siro crowd.

Norway tried to respond, but their organization was lacking. A counterattack led by Nusa and Sorloth was thwarted by the Italian defense through Bastoni and Mancini. The home side’s dominance was evident, with possession reaching over 70 percent in the first 20 minutes.

Italy nearly added another goal in the 36th minute when Dimarco delivered a precise cross and Esposito headed the ball from close range. This time, his header went wide of Nyland’s right goal. The wet pitch, due to heavy rain, made it difficult for both teams to distribute the ball.

Tension flared before halftime when Retegui went down after contact with Heggem. Italy appealed for a penalty, but the referee refused and upheld the decision after a VAR review. The final minutes were intense, but Norway remained unable to create any meaningful chances.

The first half ended with Italy leading 1-0 after three minutes of added time. The Azzurri were dominant, but Norway showed signs of improvement before the break.

Entering the second half, Norway immediately became more incisive. Within seconds, Sorloth surprised Donnarumma with a powerful shot into the side netting. This moment signaled a change in the tempo of the visiting team’s game.

The pressure continued in the 49th minute when Sorloth’s long-range effort forced Donnarumma to move quickly, followed by Thorstvedt’s cross that flew across the face of goal without touching him. Italy began to lose the control they had in the first half.

Norway finally equalized in the 63rd minute. Through a neat attacking pattern, Sorloth played the ball through the middle and Berge released the ball, giving Nusa space to shoot. The winger dribbled twice before unleashing a powerful shot at the near post, beating Donnarumma with a slight deflection. The score was now 1-1.

After that goal, Italy’s intensity dropped and Norway took control. Substitutions from both coaches failed to change the game’s direction, until Haaland finally seized his chance. The Manchester City striker made the difference in the 78th minute, finishing Oscar Bobb’s cross with a powerful volley that beat Donnarumma.

Just a minute later, Haaland struck again. Morten Thorsby delivered a through ball that Haaland met, and the striker’s chipped shot beat Donnarumma to make it 3-1. These two quick goals shattered Italy’s morale, while Haaland equaled the record for the most goals scored in European qualifying.

Italy tried to fight back through Politano, but two consecutive chances from the right flank failed to hit the target. The situation worsened in stoppage time when Norway scored a fourth.

Thorsby again played a creative role, sending a pass into space on the right, which was met by Jorgen Strand Larsen. The striker went on a solo run before beating Donnarumma with a finish into the bottom left corner.
